    So what do you do with a dog that’s just going insane due to seeing something outside? The dog is in such a frenzy they won’t take treats.

    • @DiamondDogTraining

      I am going to expand on the short to make a video. First, back up the distance you need for the dog to eat. We started this dog far down the hallway before he would eat the food. We were feeding cheese. Only the best food for this exercise. over the course of a few lessons, we could move up the hallway to the door way. Next step is to actually open the door. Hope this helps. Thank you, Joyce

      Cover the windows so they can't see without you. Plan when you have distraction to expose them to for training. Having them do a different task, like sit/stay or go to their place/kennel can help. My Malinois has to go to her bed & settle if she gives more than a token alert. We don't let her look out without us because she redlines very quickly and needs immediate redirection.

    Hello: please share some knowledge: my older dog (12 years old) French poodle, and recently got a 2 months old Shiba Inu, my French is trying to hump him, and recently started to pee at random places at the house, what can I do to help my older dog get used to new puppy ? Is this normal behavior?

    • @DiamondDogTraining
      @DiamondDogTraining 3 дні тому

      Give your Older dog lots of attention. Special time together without the puppy. Ask everyone who comes to see the new puppy to always pay attention to your French Poodle before they pet the puppy. Your older dog is acting out because they are stressed. Keep them separated except when you can sit with them and prevent the humping. Redirect the older dog away from the puppy. Maybe there is an odor from the puppy. Try wiping the puppy with a pet wipe. Also the poodle may just be trying to control the puppy and tell the puppy the poodle is in control. A little humping is not bad. The Shiba Inu is a strong willed breed and will need you to control the puppy and prevent him from jumping on the older dog. I hope this helps . Thank you . Joyce

    Hi there, I would understand if you don't respond to this because it's an older video but I do have a question that I can't really seem to find an answer to. I am also considering an IG but I live in Saskatchewan Canada where our winters average -10 - -20 C/15 - -4F and can get as cold as -40C/-40F. I know IGs aren't built for winter and I already saw your video on toilet training puppies being difficult but not impossible. What would you recommend, should we just toilet train the dog to go indoors during winter or should we persevere, dress them up and make them go outside?

    • @DiamondDogTraining
      @DiamondDogTraining 16 днів тому

      Hi, I would toilet train to go inside in the winter. My girls always go inside on their pads when the temperature drops down low and even in rainy horrible weather. Also with the coyotes, they frequently go inside at night rather than taking a chance of not seeing one outside. I think toilet training inside is a very wise idea for an Italian Greyhound where ever you live. Let me know if you get an IG and if you have any questions. Thank you . Joyce

    My iggy always barks and snaps at other dogs while on the lead so everyone sees him as a aggressive small dog 😢it’s also very sad as when he goes to italian greyhound meet ups to socialise him he doesn’t quite bark but hides from them

    • @DiamondDogTraining
      @DiamondDogTraining Місяць тому

      It sounds like he barks on walks because he is unsure of the dog. Also at the IG meetups there are lots of dogs. He is overwhelmed. Here is how you may help him . When 2 dogs walk close to each other walking the same direction, it is calming for both dogs. Do you have a friend with a. IG that will go for a walk with their dog and you and your dog in a quiet place. Just walk straight for a distance and then turn around and walk back to where you started. In the beginning, put the dogs on the outside and people in the middle as barriers. Try to choose a dog that is calm and will not jump in your dog. As you walk stop and let them sniff and continue walking. Just a quick sniff. As you walk, you want both dogs to relax and sniff each other. This is how I introduce 2 dogs who have never met. In time your dog will start to relax . Hope this helps. Your puppy needs to build confidence. Was your dog ever attacked or hurt or jumped by another dog. Fear will cause a dog to look aggressive. If you need help, you can contact a positive trainer in your area. It takes time to help a frightened dog to accept being close to another dog. Distance from the dog, lots of good food and short times your dog sees the dog are essential. Let me know how you are doing . Joyce

Start with chicken or cheese and just sit or stand and feed your dog as the dog is passing . The dog should pass no closer than 30-40 feet. There are so many things you can do to help your puppy. Hilarious! My dog cares much more for the environment than me. Even in the house. However, attempting this type technique (figure 8 pivots and opposite to dog when she walks away), after almost SIX YEARS working EVERY DAY my dog is about to the stage I usually see of a four month old dog (from 10 of my own). What type of dog? A female Airedale who's been with me since she was 10 weeks when all evidence I’ve gathered tells me was the point in her life when her potty training began (😮), her house manners began (😲), her bite awreness began (🫨), her interactive toy play began (😵‍💫), her crate training began (😬) purposeful socialization began (😢), positive introduction to other species cats began (😢), etc... and when I began to become educated how restrictive are confines of genetics upon influence of training efforts... Yeah.... so I'd say the process/people that put her into society: worth avoiding when seeking a biddable adaptable well-balanced dog that is interested in the other side of the leash!! 🤓 I'm hoping follow up comments share how well the technique in the video work for their dogs because it really seems a great technique for what I'd consider normal companion dogs! 😍 So grateful for force free techniques respecting dogs' choices showing us how to help our dogs head toward good citizen (community canine) behavior choices! 😃

      Hello Michelle, thank you for your thoughtful comment. I hope people do comment on their success with this method of teaching loose leash walking. When I am teaching a dog to walk beside me, I practice for a very short distance and then switch to allowing the dog to walk on a longer leash and enjoy sniffing as long as the dog is not pulling me. Keeping the training time short and allowing the sniffing helps the dog to focus on you when we are walking. With an Airedale , I would consider adding a flirt pole to chase or a stuffed animal toy to allow the dog to play In between the short training times. Please let me know if I can be of any help . I would love your feedback . Thank you . Joyce

      There is no correct side to walk a dog. I like to tell my clients walk your dog away from traffic. Many people prefer the right side. Traditional does not mean necessarily correct. You have your method and I have a different method. As long as you are doing positive training, we are both ok .

    My baby boy is an (unconfirmed but if you see him you can tell by body) italian greyhound mix (we think mixed with Chihuahua based on his appearance). The potty training is so true, he did pad train but never got house broken. I have a silicone pad the put his on so it isnt right on the floor. Fortunately his face is less narrow due to being a mixed breed so less risk of dental issues. He is the sweetest little guy though. Super cuddly. Sticks to me like absolute glue.

    Your Iggies’ joints are going to suffer from being sooo overweight. They are so fat they hardly look like iggies. They should have a nice tuck up and ribs just barely visible. Please be a good owner and help them to lose some weight. Do they get any exercise? They are “biggies,” a sign that they don’t have great breeding, but at their size should probably have a healthy weight of about 16 pounds +/-.

      Both of my girls weigh 14.5 pounds. Nicky is low in leg and longer In Body. Beezie is more the true IG outline. Higher on leg and tuck up. Both girls love their walks and are very active and healthy.

    Please put your IG on a diet. He is hugely overweight. How can a trainer do this to their own dog?
